My Top 10 Pembrokeshire Locations

This list changes, probably every 6 months when I have had the chance to discover new places or simply fall more in love with places I’ve been to before but not appreciated them yet or seen them in the right light.  Having recently ventured on a week of photographing Pembrokeshire for a 2017/18 project, here is the list as it stands today…… -Nigel J Bevans

#1  Porthgain
Porthgain is naturally a favourite for me due to the fact I spent lots of my childhood days here as this is where my Grandparents lived and my Mother was born.  I remember the ‘quieter’ Porthgain, the ‘tiny’ Pub and walking to nearby Abereiddi along the cliff top without seeing a soul.  Much of the original character is still here but a lot busier especially during the holiday seasons.  I think if I wanted to see the ‘quiet’ Porthgain again I would have to come here and stay overnight again, which is something that has now actually been planned…….

#2 Broad Haven (North)
Only recently have I become more fond of this beach again.  Spent a lot of time here as a child and now liking it for total different reasons.  There are great rock formations and pools to experiment with reflective photography and some lovely Sunsets to be had here.  Providing the beach is quiet you can do loads of photography in the ‘Golden ‘Hour’ due to the ever changing light on the rocks and the pools giving each photo a new look.

#3  Tenby

Always a favourite of mine due to the vast number of photo opportunities there, North Beach, South Beach, St Catherines Island and Caldey Island just a Boat trip away.  Early Morning is a favourite for me here as you escape the hustle and bustle that you expect in this busy fishing town especially in the height of Summer, but still a firm favourite.

#4  Strumble Head Lighthouse
This is a new addition to the many places I have visited around Pembrokeshire.  The first visit was quite a long one as it takes a little while to find where it is and not very well sign posted, then after a long journey it was a very drab Sunset.  The next night was more promising and got there in no time at all with a great Sunset and with a bit of patience got some lovely shots.  Looking forward to more Sunsets here in future as no two Pembrokeshire Sunsets are the same!

#5  Carew Castle and Tidal Mill
I have always loved this place but recently went at an extremely early hour to catch a Sunrise, and I was so pleased I did.  The waters surrounding the Castle had a thin layer of mist and the grass was frosty, it was magical watching the light transform this beautiful place before my very eyes.

Picture
#6  Bosherston Lily Ponds.
One of my favourite places for many reasons, not just the golden photographic opportunities here.  The walk around this area is like being in a total different country (when the weathers warm)  A brilliant place for nature enthusiasts, you cannot get more close to nature than this place.

Picture
#7  The Green Bridge of Wales.
I only managed to visit this place recently for the first time and instantly fell in love with it, simply because of it being so untouched by man yet being so lovely to look at.  Easier to find than I thought it would be you can either walk to it from St Govan’s Head (about an hour or two) or park nearby in Castlemartin and then it’s just a short walk to the cliff edge.  Either way you will be in awe when you get there.  Always double check the surrounding roads are open as sometimes they are closed due to firing on the Castlemartin firing range nearby.

#8   Druidstone Haven.
Set in between Broad Haven and Nolton Haven this is a place I enjoy visiting and even more so when there is a classic Pembrokeshire Sunset as the features of this place show it off to its full capacity.   When the tide is in it gives the appearance of quite a stony beach but when it is out there is quite a lot of sand to be had.  Due to there not being many places to park nearby this beach does not get as busy as its neighbouring beaches either.

Picture
#9  Skomer Island.
I have lived in Pembrokeshire all my life yet is was only a couple of years ago I managed to get to Skomer Island.  You land there after a short boat trip from Martins Haven (booking needed for boat trip) and after a quick debrief from the Islands Wardens you are free to roam the Island for the next 4 hours.  The main attraction for me are the Puffins, always a delight to watch and photograph even coming up and striking the occasional pose!   Of course the Island is teaming with other Bird life and the waters surrounding the Island give opportunity to spot a host of other wonderful creatures like Porpoises and Seals.

Picture
#10 St Govan’s Chapel.
This legendary 14th Century Chapel is hugely popular with Tourists and Photographers.   Built into the side of Limestone cliffs it is always a fascination to be there looking at this piece of Celtic history.  Always check beforehand that the road to this landmark is open as it is often closed due to firing on the nearby Castlemartin firing range.
